Heavy Cover Stock Lamination | Wholesale, 12pt to 18pt+

Board, cover and tag — and a straight answer on the caliper ceiling.

Answer block

We laminate heavy cover and board stock as trade work for printers — the folder, box wrap, hang tag, presentation cover and card jobs that a pouch machine cannot pull. Gloss or matte, 1.5 to 10 mil, up to 27 inches wide and any length.

Conditional tail: — If pending: “We have deliberately not published a maximum caliper figure, because the honest answer depends on the board and we will not print a number we have not pulled. Call with your stock and we will tell you yes or no before you ship.”

Why there is a dash next to “heaviest caliper”

You searched for a specific number — 18pt — so you deserve to know why this page does not simply assert one.

A caliper ceiling is not a marketing figure, it is a machine figure, and it moves with the board. An 18pt coated one-side board and an 18pt uncoated tag do not behave the same going through a nip. Publishing a confident number we have not verified against your actual stock is how a printer ends up shipping a pallet that comes back.

So the row above stays a dash until it is measured, and in the meantime you get something more useful than a number: call with the exact board — brand, caliper, coated or not — and you will get a yes or a no before anything moves. Everything else on this page is a fact we can stand behind today.

What actually goes wrong on heavy stock

Caliper is rarely the thing that spoils a cover job. These are, in the order we see them:

  • Heavy ink coverage. Coverage drives the bond strength required. A text-only sheet

asks almost nothing of the adhesive; a solid flooded cover asks a great deal, and the same film that ran perfectly last week can lift on this week’s job.

  • Metallic inks. Metallic ink carries a stearate lubricant that migrates to the surface

as it dries, and the adhesive cannot key to it. Worse, the metal platelets are weakly bound to each other, so what adhesion you get reaches only the top layer. Laminate over metallic that bleeds off the trim and it will delaminate at the edge under stress. Tell us before, not after.

  • Toner and UV-cured inkjet. Fuser oils and instantly-cured UV inks both fight standard

adhesives — UV ink has no time to level, leaving a rough surface the adhesive has to flow into. Both need a higher-strength film.

  • Spray powder. Anti-set-off powder comes natural or silicone-coated, and the

silicone-coated grades cannot be used on work that will be laminated or foiled. Too much powder, or too coarse a grade, causes trouble even in the natural version.

  • Sharp corners. Heavy board under a thick laminate gives you genuinely sharp corners.

Round them — always on anything handled by children, usually on anything handled at all.

Getting the gauge right on cover work

The rule that saves the most jobs: if the piece has to fold, use 3 mil or less. A 5 mil laminate on a folding cover will spring back open and eventually crack along the score, and no amount of care at the bench fixes a gauge that was wrong on the quote.

The rule that saves the most money: buy rigidity from the stock, not the film. Printing on a heavier board with a thinner laminate is generally cheaper than a lighter board under a thick one, and it lies flatter.

And the one people forget: gauge is quoted per side. A 5 mil laminate adds 10 mil to the finished caliper, and a 10 mil adds 20. On a folder that has to fit a die or a box that has to fit a sleeve, that arithmetic decides whether the job assembles.

FAQs (emit as FAQPage schema)

Do you laminate 18pt cover stock? (Conditional.) exact board and we will confirm before you ship.” — If pending: “Probably, but we are not going to print a caliper ceiling we have not verified on the machine. Call (254) 290-6337 with the exact board — brand, caliper, coated or uncoated — and you will get a straight yes or no before you ship anything. We would rather turn a job down on the phone than have it come back on a pallet.”

Can you laminate one side only for perfect-bound covers? (Conditional.) — If pending: “Ask when you call — single-sided capability is not something we have published, and we are not going to imply it here. Be aware that single-sided work on lighter stock curls toward the laminated face, because the sealed side is rigid while the bare back keeps taking up humidity. Heavier board resists it; light stock does not.”

Will lamination stick over heavy solid coverage? Usually, with the right film and a slower line, because coverage directly raises the bond strength required. Flag heavy solids on the job ticket. Metallic inks are the genuine exception and often will not hold at all — the lubricant in the ink prevents the adhesive keying to it.

How much thickness does the laminate add? Twice the quoted gauge, because gauge is per side. 1.5 mil film adds 3 mil to the finished piece, 5 mil adds 10, 10 mil adds 20. Worth checking against any die or sleeve the piece has to fit.
